Below are some optimisation strategies I have delivered for clients to date:
What it is: Correcting run hours, aligning HVAC/lighting schedules with actual occupancy, removing historic overrides.
Why it matters: Typically the highest ROI – quick wins with measurable reductions in kWh and demand.
Tech used: Schedules, calendars, occupancy sensors and main/virtual meters set up prior to implementation to prove savings.
What it is: Optimising temperature setpoints, reducing overheating/overcooling, creating proper heating/cooling zones in older buildings.
Why it matters: Solves comfort complaints, reduces wasted heat/coolth, and avoids “fighting” systems.
Tech used: Zone sensors, TRVs, strategy rewrites, hydraulic zoning.
What it is: BMS automatically calculates the optimal time to warm-up or cool-down a building.
Why it matters: Avoids early starts and unnecessary running; can save 5–15% of HVAC energy.
Tech used: Weather data, internal temperature feedback loops, trend analytics.
What it is: Using main main incomer (gas, electricity and water) and BMS data to create virtual meters for HVAC components, applying regression or load models based on IMPVP protocol to measure savings.
Why it matters: Clear evidence of cost and carbon reduction. Supports CAPEX decisions and funding bids. Builds confidence with senior leadership and stakeholders
Tech used: IPMVP aligned techniques and 10+ years experience in energy management systems.
